Scooter Society

Jeff and I got a new Honda Metropolitan scooter!

It all started when we stopped by the Vespa store in Los Angeles. The row of shiny Vespas outside were so purdy... especially the custom two-tone models. A month or so later, we rented a generic scooter to whizz around Block Island for our anniversary. And as it turns out, scooters are lots of fun!

Jump to a week later, and we're getting the spiel from a Vespa dealer near Providence who is right from the cast of Sopranos. The dealer and the Vespa itself proved to be more than I could handle. When it comes right down to it, Vespas are motorcycles! In fact, you need a motorcycle license to ride one in Rhode Island. They're heavy, and fast, and not cheap. I was overwhelmed.

Jeff used the powers of the Internet to continue to seek out other scooter options. He came across the Honda Metropolitan which seemed like just the right scooter for us. It's retro (like the Vespas), two-tone (like our favorites), and half the price of the low-end Vespa. (How much, you're wondering? It was $1700.)

After a bit of research and a trip to Connecticut, we brought our baby blue scooter home. To be honest, this is primarily Jeff's toy. He uses it to commute to work in downtown Providence. I take it for errands around the East Side on sunny weekends.

The interesting thing is that we're starting to see scooters all over town. Not only that, a scooter-slash-coffee shop just opened in our neighborhood. It is the only scooter repair shop around the greater Boston area. We like to think we are pioneers of a blossoming scooter society centered in the up-n-coming hipster hangout of Providence, Rhode Island. Or, maybe not.
